Thank you, Barbara Fisher!

Imagine my surprise when my wonderful friend Barbara Fisher-http://marchhousebookscom.blogspot.com/  tagged me for this award!  A lovely challenge and a no brainer for this week's blog! Here are Barbara's 10 questions and my answers:

1) What is your earliest memory?   As a baby I remember a large, beautiful silver basket with flowers and leaves and animals. It had a wonderful texture. I could feel the shapes of the roses, the little rabbits, etc.  My mother usually had florist flowers in it- it was usually on a coffee table. I wish I had it! Or even a good photo!

2) Where is your favourite place in the world and why?   There used to be ( it may be there still under another name) a wonderful little bookshop across the street from Wells Cathedral in Somerset England. I loved that shop and when the Bevans moved to Wales I had dreams of buying it and living there! Otherwise I love London, Verona and the Veneto area, - and New Orleans -where I grew up.

3)Do you have a favourite piece of clothing or footwear?   YES!!
My beautiful blue skirt I bought many years ago in Paris. Here I am wearing it at Versailles soon after I bought it- and much more recently shooting a video in my room.
AND- the gorgeous cream boots and red Mary Janes from Anello and Davide in London also bought many, many years ago. Sadly they are no longer comfortable to wear!

4) What inspired you to write a blog?  The six word autobiography challenge set by Oprah years ago. My very first post!
5) Favourite snack : Plain chocolate Cadbury Fruit and Nut bar or plain chocolate Digestives.
Otherwise just excellent quality plain chocolate!

6) Have you ever acted or sung on stage?  Yes many times -singing as an adult. Ballet until I was 14.

7) Have you or anyone in your family traced your ancestry?  Yes, my sister as well as cousins on both sides of the family - back to the 1600s. Must have been some  shady characters - we came to America before the Revolutionary War  and we have Viking genes. Certainly some marauding adventurers!

Have you ever experienced déjá vu?  Frequently.

Do you sing in the shower or the car or both?  I prefer baths and I do not drive a car- but I LOVE to sing!

Have you enjoyed participating in this tag?  YES! Thank you again, Barbara!

Dear Colleen, thank you so much for joining in with the tag. I thoroughly enjoyed all your answers, especially the one about your favourite clothing and footwear. The addition of photographs brought the post alive, thank you.

I love Wells, although I’ve not visited for several years, and I honestly don’t remember a bookshop so maybe it closed down. Next time I visit I will make a point of looking for it.

Your questions are very creative, and I’m looking forward to visiting the other blogs to read the responses.

Have a wonderful weekend, x

1)Walking
2)A tin Mobo Pony, I have an old black-and-white photograph of me playing with it, but I’m as naked as the day is long so I can’t share it online.
3)Country and Western, I’ve no idea why I just love it.
4)I’ve read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe so many times I’m on to my third copy – the previous two fell apart. I’ve also read all the Famous Five and Secret Seven books numerous times and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
5)I used to make clothes and knit when I was younger but no so much these days. The only things I’ve made recently were two dressing up cloaks for my granddaughters when they were in the UK last Christmas.
6)Morning songbird
7)Books. Each time I pick up a book I become a different person I somehow inhabit the stories – don’t ask me how.
8)A selfish wish first if I may; A cure could be found for my son’s illness. It would benefit him and all the other people suffering from ankylosing spondylitis and ulcerative colitis.
A better world for homeless people including those sleeping in shop doorways tonight and those fleeing from bombs.
Most importantly for kindness to come back to this world, we could achieve so much if we would just be kind to one another.
9)I have a kind heart and cannot abide cruelty to animals or people. My kind heart has been known to get me into trouble as in the case last week when I heard a man abusing his dog. I’m not sure if he kicked the dog or hit it but there was a sickening thud accompanied by a lot of shouting and swearing and a pitiful noise coming from the dog. I’m afraid the man (who was in his own garden behind a hedge) received a very thorough tongue lashing from me. I marched up to his gate and threatened him with all kinds of retribution. Perhaps I’m not so kind after all because at that moment I would happily have throttled him!
10)Please see my answer to question eight – kindness is the key.

Barbara! I LOVE your answers! I hope you reported the man so that the poor dog can find another home!
I know Bevans Books is no longer there because when the Bevan family moved to Wales, we were working toward buying the shop. The trouble was the "grandfather clause" about the residential part of the building. The new rules were going to make the renovations cost more than the shop! We looked for other places to live in England, but my heart had been set on Wells and that particular shop was one of my favourites. We did visit the Bevans in Wales and continued to buy books from them for a few years.
I LOVE The Lion ,the Witch and the Wardrobe! I have Geoffrey Bles first editions -not all with jackets- but LWW does! I read them carefully every now and then as a treat. otherwise i re-read the "reading"copies or listen to the BBC audio versions which i love. Also I re-read the Famous Five series! An American series I love is Walter Farley's The Black Stallion. Books ARE Magical! I am sure they saved my sanity as a child. I remain amazed at how much we have in common...

Bless you Colleen you always say the nicest things! I’m sad I missed out on Bevan Books. I would have enjoyed browsing. Not so long ago there was a super little second hand book shop in the square at Wimborne Minster and another in Sturminster Newton, both now gone. I desperately wanted to open a second-hand book shop and even got as far as looking at premises but in the event of the problems with the economy and the ease of buying books online I’m sort of glad I didn’t take the plunge. My virtual bookshop was enough to satisfy my longing to surround myself with books and now that I no longer trade I have a lovely book room to keep all my favourite things in.
How lucky you are to have first editions of The Lion … series my very first copy (a prize from my school) was one of the original paperbacks with the Pauline Baynes illustrations. I loved it and read it until it completely disintegrated. I smiled when you said you “read them carefully” I do the same with the Famous Fives – I should read the paperback reprints, but I love the feel and smell of the originals! I’m sorry to say I’ve not read The Black Stallion, but I’ve just added it to my ‘must’ list.

Great answers to Barbara's fun questions, Colleen, and I like your new questions, too (and Barbara's answers). I'm hoping to get back to this post and answer them myself. I LOVE your beautiful blue skirt (pretty picture), that skirt would be my favorite clothes item, too!

Marcia! I am so looking forward to your answers to Barbara's questions and the questions that you set for the bloggers you tag as well as your readers. this is really fun! Barbara's question prompted me to get the skirt out of my closet and start making some new tops for it. I will post a blog with my progress on them i really need to wear that skirt more often! Thank you for being such a faithful reader and commenting on my posts, Marcia!

You're welcome, it's a pleasure. I ran out of time, but did answer your first four questions. Here they are: 1)What fun activity do you do everyday (or most days!)? I work in a public library in a small town.
2) What was your favourite toy as a child/ Do you still have the toy? or one very like it? One of my favorite pastimes as a child was playing with paper dolls and I still have a collection.
3)What is your favourite type of music? I love many types of music from blues to pop. A few favorite songs that come to mind: Van Morrison, Moon Dance; Neil Young, Harvest Moon; and Norah Jones, Come Away With Me.
4) Are there books or movies you have read/watched many times? Which ones? Unlike many, I don’t tend to read books over and over again,
As you can see I stopped right in the middle of my answer, but I do like your questions (even stole a couple for my own post...) Happy to hear you pulled out that beautiful skirt again!

Marcia! I still love my paper dolls! I actually get them out and play with them. I LOVE Moon Dance! I look forward to your answers to Barbara's questions! See you over on your blog...

Dear Colleen & Marcia forgive me for chiming in, but I just had to say I also LOVE paper dolls. I can't wait to read Marcia's post, such fun

Please chime in as often as you like, Barbara! Do you still have any of your paper dolls? Have you seen any of your favourites on Pinterest or in Picasa?

Barbara said...

Hello Colleen, I don't have any of the paper dolls I played with, probably because I wore them out! :-) I do have one or two paper doll books found while browsing flea markets. I would love to collect them, but they are not easy to come by. My grandma Daisy used to keep the Woman and Home Magazines for me and in those were twin paper dolls. I loved them and played with them all the time. I’ve seen some of those on Pinterest but never found a magazine with them in.
Have a wonderful Christmas and the best New Year. Barbara xx

Than goodness for Pinterest and Picasa! We can see our old favourites. Ebay USA has many paper dolls - does Ebay UK? I have found many of my childhood paper dolls at reasonable prices. i have also been known to pay ridiculous prices for a few rare one I was desperate to have again ;^)
Happy Christmas!

Ebay UK does have a few paper dolls, but the ones I like are usually very expensive, so I continue to hunt for them at flea markets. Like you, I have been tempted once or twice and spent more than I should, but then I get cross with myself and don’t look on there for a while. :-)
I hope you are well Colleen. I also hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and are looking forward to 2017... Happy New Year to you and all those you love. Barbara xx
